Lee Valley Lions – 2
DALROD Peterborough Islanders – 6
The Peterborough Islanders travelled to Lee Valley to begin their NIHL2S league campaign on Sunday. Last season’s opener saw the teams draw 2-2.
By the end of the 1st the Islanders led 2-1 thanks to strikes from Brad Moore and a first goal for new Islander Kenny Bavin.
The second period saw the Islanders take far greater command of the game with Moore picking up his second and James Pentecost and Nathan Pollard opening their 15/16 accounts before the end of the period.
The final period was a closer affair with the Lions getting back on the score sheet however this proved to be little consolation as Conor Pollard put the game to bed with a late strike to seal the deal at 2-6.
Speaking after the game, forward, Nathan Pollard told us: “it was nice to shake the rust off and start with a win. We dominated the game from start to finish, and although we weren’t as clinical as we should be, the chances were being created.
This was a theme reflected by head coach Stevie Johnson: “We outshot the Lions 70-19, so the score could have been much higher if the boys weren’t still a little rusty, but it was great to see the boys start with a win. A special mention goes to Kenny Bavin, returning to the islanders in style with a goal and the man of the match award”.
The Islanders play their first home game of the season on Saturday 19th September against the Invicta Mustangs. Face off for that game is 5:00pm.
