Following the successes of the previous season, the Islanders are back in force. With some new signings and some old faces rejoining the clan, they racked up their first win of the year.
Hoping not to give much away to the competition, Coach Stevie Johnson and Assistant Coach Steve Wren waited to officially announce the squad until after the Islanders first game of the season.
The Isles travelled to Lee Valley on Sunday looking to shake off the last of the summer rust and, despite some teething problems early on, ground out a win. A 6-2 victory over the Lee Valley Lions was a great way to start the season and sets them up well for the rest of the cup competition.
The Islanders welcomed back some of last season’s stars. Shaun Yardley, Connor Stokes, Brad Moore and Nathan and Conor Pollard all rejoin the team with many of last years squad also returning for another year. The nucleus of last year’s team is aided by new signings in defenceman Craig Wallis, forward Kenny Bavin and goaltender Adam Long.
Wallis showed that he is a great new signing for the Islanders when he was called up to debut for the Phantoms earlier in the week. Bavin also made his mark early on, slotting in his first Islanders goal and claiming man of the match at the weekend. Long will compete for the net alongside Dan Lane making a formidable goaltending team and adding confidence to an already strong defensive lineup.
The Islanders also celebrate the return of former islanders players John Brammall, Clint Herring, Rob MacDonald and James Pentecost, who comes back after a particularly fantastic season with the Oxford City Stars.
The Islanders squad shows depth of talent that it has not seen in several years and expect to rival any team in the league. After finding their feet at the weekend they look ahead to a promising season.
