The DALROD Peterborough Islanders continued their League campaign facing the Invicta Mustangs. Two of their number, brothers Conor & Nathan Pollard fresh from their appearance for the Phantoms the night before against the Hull Pirates.
The period started off with a shock for the Islanders as the Mustangs opened the scoring at 30 seconds as Jake Luton and Kwame Holt combined to take advantage of a slow start. The game bubbled on with a physical edge that took an unfortunate turn, Jake Samal took a hit hard into the boards while off balance ending his game as he needed assisting off of the ice. While no penalty was called, the nature of the hit set the tone as moments later, Jon Bramhall took a boarding penalty at 2:54. With that penalty killed the back and forth continued until 8:29 when Rob McDonald picked up a delay of game call, however, a minute in, Mustangs player Kyle Terrell picked up a high sticking call at 9:26. A mustangs tripping penalty was also killed, and it was a further high sticking call at 15:05 broke the seal for the Islanders and just 9 seconds into the power play James Pentecost scored from Nathan & Conor Pollard at 15:14. From then on it was business as usual. Goals at 17:49 from Clint Herring, (ass N Pollard & Bramhall), and 19:44 from Conor Pollard, (ass Cetvertak & Stokes), saw the Islanders end the period 3-1 ahead.
The second period started much as the first, despite being robbed repeatedly by Mustangs Netminder and Man of the Match Matthew Passmore, Connor Hunter made it 4 at 21:21, (ass Herring), and 38 seconds later, Clint Herring got his second at 21:59, (Ass Cetvertak), however after a moment to collect themselves, Mustangs hit back with James Laming scoring from Jake Luton at 22:23. The Islanders then hit penalty trouble as Callum Worthington Evans picked up 2 minutes for slashing just before the 25 minute mark, however with that killed, the Islanders were back on the offensive and at 30:48 Nathan Pollard made it 6-2, (ass Cetvertak and Herring) and added a second at 35:24, (ass C Pollard & Pentecost). Clint Herring picked up his hatrick goat at 36:35 to round out the period with the Islanders leading 8-2.
The third started as a quiet affair, killing a Barlow elbowing penalty picked up at the end of the second, it was at 43:34 that Jake Luton picked up a hooking minor, and 28 seconds later Conor Pollard picked up his 2nd at 44:02, (ass N Pollard & McDonald). Number 10 came at 47:08 as Islanders Man of The Match Sam Barlow picked up a rebound from Connor Stokes shot on goal. The final goal of the evening came from Mustangs’ Jake Luton as he combined with Kwame Holt and Tom Dennis at 49:29. A Mustangs High sticking Penalty at 49:36 didn’t cause any change to the scores, and as the clock wound down, the Islanders ran out 10-3 winners and maintain their 100% league record.
After the game, the unfortunate news surfaced that due to his earlier collision, Jake Samal has suffered a broken leg that will require surgery to set and is expected to be out for approximately 12 months.
