DALROD Peterborough Islanders – 5
London Racers – 2
The DALROD Peterborough Islanders returned to league action after a 6 week Christmas break to face a much improved London Racers side. The scale of this improvement was demonstrated less than 2 minutes into the game as Racers forward Stuart Appleby picked up a pass from Captain Matt Brown to open the scoring at 1:45. After building the pressure, the Islanders struck next with Lithuanian Deivid Cetvertak equalising with the assists going to James Pentecost and Jon Bramhall. With a little under 3 minutes to go, the Islanders ran into penalty trouble as Sam Barlow picked up 2 minutes for interference, the penalty kill went to plan, and to ice the cake, after Connor Stokes and Jon Brammall robbed the Racers of the puck feeding Cetvertak for his second of the night, this time short handed giving the Islanders a 2-1 lead at the end of the first.
The second period started with the Islanders looking to build on the pressure from the first period, however Racers netminder Aaron Mallet pulled off save after save to frustrate the Islanders forwards. A Leon Groom penalty at 23:01 for High Sticking saw the Racers take the opportunity to even the scores at 23:45 as Nick Minhinnick put home the PPG. A little under 2 minutes Later Connor Stokes restored the lead with assists from Cetvertak and Barlow at 25:29. After killing a Clint Herring penalty for slashing, the Islanders continued to apply pressure to the Racers, with Mallet proving almost impossible to beat, and, to add insult to injury, Nathan Pollard, David Cetvertak and Connor Stokes found the post with consecutive shots, and on the following shift, James Pentecost joined the bell ringers club also finding the post after beating Mallet. It took until 37:38 before Nathan Pollard beat both Mallet and the posts to give the Islanders a 2 goal lead assisted by Nathan Long and Jon Brammall, (his third point of the night), and ending the 2nd Period leading 4-2.
The final period started as the 2nd had ended, the Islanders hammering the Racers netminder and the netminder continuing to frustrate the Islanders bets efforts. After three minutes Stuart Appleby picked up a holding penalty for the Racers giving the Islanders a further chance to increase their lead. However, the Racers defence corps came together giving Mallet some shelter from the barrage to keep it a 2 goal game. Following an altercation between Shaun Yardley and Solomon Smith which saw them both sit 2+2 for fighting, (coincidental), just before the 45 minute mark. This left the sides just unbalanced enough for Connor Pollard, assisted by Nathan Pollard and Rob MacDonald to fire home the 5th goal at 47:30. Later flurries of shots saw Racers Man of the Match Aaron Mallet continue his masterclass in netminding to keep it at a three goal game until the final buzzer, while his 2+1 game saw Deivid Cetvertak pick up the beers for the Islanders and keep the Islanders 100% league record.
The Islanders return to league action on 22nd January when they host the Invicta Mustangs at 5pm.
