Islanders Top Cup Group

The Dalrod Peterborough Islanders faced the Lee Valley Lions for the second time this season in their final group game in the cup. Having already won the group the night before after Swindon defeated Bristol, the Islanders were able to rest a couple of players due to injuries and a few others missed out due to other commitments.

After a slow start from the Islanders, Lee Valley capitalized and James Hepburn beat Dan Lane from a distance with a goal that Lane would definitely want back. However the Islanders hit back to equalize with a nice finish from Conor Pollard. The Lions would take a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes with another goal from Hepburn and a shorthanded effort from Chris Fox. Captain Rob McDonald stepped up on the powerplay and sent a shot from the blue line into the top corner to cut the deficit to 1 goal at the end of the first period. The Islanders heavily outshot the Lions 23-7 but netminder James Andrew made some great saves to keep the Lions in the lead.

Scores were level after two minutes of the second period, courtesy of Conor Pollards second goal of the game and the score remained at 3-3 until a shorthanded goal from Brad Moore at 34:39 put the Islanders into the lead for the first time. The second period finished 4-3 in the Islanders favour.

A strong period was needed by the Islanders to ensure they took the two points back to Pererborough with them, and 4 unanswered goals secured the points. David Cetvertak with a nice finish off the post, two goals from Shaun Yardley and Brad Moore grabbing his second of the game. The game finished 8-3 in the Islanders favour to leave them at the top of the group with 10 points and they will face the runners up of the other group in the Semi-finals. The Semi-finals and Final will be in Cardiff in April 2017.

Man of the match: Conor Pollard

The Islanders now turn their focus back onto the league and face the Slough Jets at home this Saturday (3rd December). Phantoms fans that attend the Islanders game will be able to get their ticket to Sundays game against the Bracknell Bees for just £10!
